James Elkington moved from London to Chicago around the turn of the millennium and has since released a string of albums as leader of The Zincs for Thrill Jockey Records. After dissolving the band in 2008, Elkington has concentrated on acoustic, folk-tinged music with his band The Horse’s Ha (that he shares with Freakwater’s Janet Bean), culminating in the release of their debut album, “Of The Cathmawr Yards” in 2009. He is also the owner/operator of a clunky solo career, and moonlights convincingly as the guitar player in Jon Langford’s (of The Mekons) Skull Orchard.

Nathan Salsburg was born in that Diamond City, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania—she of anthracite glimmer and Babe Ruth’s 1926 long ball—and is a longtime resident of Louisville, Kentucky. He is a folklorist and a producer and presenter of traditional music for East Village Radio, the Drag City imprint Twos & Fews, and the Alan Lomax Archive, among other outlets. His first solo record is called Affirmed, and it’s about race horses—Affirmed, Bold Ruler, and Eight Belles, specifically—and desire and reckonings of the spirit. It’s an almost entirely instrumental affair, save his elegiac rendering of the traditional tune “The False True Love.”

Following-up to the last year’s mini-album “Heretofore,” Durham, NC-based Megafaun‘s self-titled third full-length album is due out on September 20th via Hometapes. It was recorded late last year at their former bandmate (DeYarmond Edison) Justin Vernon’s April Base Studios in Fall Creek, WI, and self-produced with the help of BJ Burton. ‘These Words’ is taken from the new album.

DeYarmond Edison – Where We Belong from an unreleased EP (2006).
DeYarmond Edison (2002–2006) was founded by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Megafaun’s Brad Cook, Phil Cook, Joe Westerlund. They re-united for a three-song set at The Fader Fort at SXSW. 2011.

Mark Growden has been known as San Francisco-based multi-instrumentalist, with several critically acclaimed albums. “Saint Judas,” his 9th album is the 1st studio album of songs in eight years (recorded live in the Bay Area), out now on Porto Franco Records.

Growden is captivated with old American music, mainly African-American, recorded by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in the 1930s and 1940s; Several tracks on Saint Judas are reworkings of these songs. Album opener “Undertaker,” based on a Lomax field recording of the prison work song “Rosie,” introduces the theme of resurrection. “Dig me a grave, in the open plain. Lower me down, and pull me up again,” sings Growden, over a howling guitar and trumpet. And the closing banjo-and-voice only “All the Pretty Little Horses” is a version of an old spiritual Growden calls “one of his favorite songs ever” which was written, according to legend, by a woman watching horses pull her child’s hearse through the streets.
