Shannon Stephens, a Seattle-based singer/songwriter who started her career playing with Sufjan Stevens in Marzuki and has had her music covered by Bonnie Prince Billy, has just released her third album “Pull It Together” via Asthmatic Kitty. DM Stith – piano & choir
Shannon Stephens – Care of You, from “Pull It Together”
Stephens’ increased confidence also transformed her method of recording for this third release. Where previously she added orchestral players to fill out her songs, this time she took a blues approach to her arrangements. Drawing together a new band of accomplished musicians, she gave them the freedom to explore and create. With Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell) on guitars, James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, Pedro the Lion) on drums and Steve Moore (Sufjan Stevens, Laura Veirs) on keyboards, Stephens found herself discovering new facets of her own compositions. Pull It Together is treated with warm, intimate production thanks to the contributions of Grammy winning engineer Kory Kruckenberg (Rose Thomas, Damien Jurado). Kruckenberg’s light approach to mixing preserved the spontaneity and the vintage spark of the band’s 8-track recordings. The album features a collaboration with DM Stith and backing vocals by Galen Disston of Pickwick.
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – I’ll Be Glad 3/12/09 in Bloomington at the Buskirk
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy covered Stephens’ song ‘I’ll Be Glad’ on his 2008 album “Lie Down In The Light,” the song was originally appeared on her self-titled debut full-length (2000) from Asthmatic Kitty, Re-pressed on 2010.
Sufjan Stevens – Get Real, Get Right Director/Animatio: Sufjan Stevens Editing and Compositing: Deborah Johnson Original Artwork: Royal Robertson
You can purchase MAKE on DVD, the documentary that inspired Sufjan Stevens’ The Age of Adz and tells the story of several artists including Royal Robertson, HERE. Visit makedocumentary.com
The documentary, MAKE, is an intimate journey into the lives of four American self-taught artists: Prophet Royal Robertson, Hawkins Bolden, Judith Scott and Ike Morgan. Isolated and struggling with the disabilities life has dealt them, these artists all find their most powerful voice through art.
These songs were originally intended as a Christmas gift to Roberto’s parents but then he decided to share it with everyone. Just like an empanada, its quickly consumed but will linger in your memory.
Both tracks are taken from Helado Negro aka Roberto Carlos Lange’s free EP “Pasajero” on his bandcamp page. This eight-track EP featuring two original songs and covers of South American tunes (Roberto Carlos, Eduardo Mateo, Leo Dan, Los Iracundos), also “Adios Maldito Mundo,” translated version of Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Cruel World.” ‘Deja’ is taken from his 2009 Asthmatic Kitty debut full-length “Awe Owe.”
Half-handed Cloud – Armstrong’s Line
“As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth band name,” the new full length by Half-handed Cloud is available now on Asthmatic Kitty Records, a Digital download is available from Bandcamp page. Half-handed Cloud aka Berkeley, California based John Ringhofer is also known as a trombonist for Sufjan Stevens’ Illinoisemakers, or as a occasional bassist for Danielson.
Asthmatic Kitty Records presents the fifth Half-handed Cloud full-length album: As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth, or Stowaways for short. Connected with the lyrical tradition of 19th Century American hymns such as “Shall We Gather at the River?” “Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb?” and “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing,” these tunes splash about in cavernous spaces opened up by irregularly measured rhythms and pocket-orchestra arrangements integrated with creaky pianos, sound-loops, a tugboat of a church organ, guitars, and billowing banjos.
Half-handed Cloud’s John Ringhofer recorded this album on his half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine in the sanctuary and custodial quarters of a church in Berkeley, California, where he’s lived and worked as a custodian for the past seven years. He played most of the parts himself, joined by friends on cello, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and flute. Brandon Buckner, one-third of Ringhofer’s former band, Wookieback, is behind the drum-kit for the duration of this record. The album was mixed with Daniel Smith (Danielson) at Familyre Studio in Clarksboro, New Jersey.
