Formed in 2005, under the banner “a modern American string band,” the Boston-based Joy Kills Sorrow comprises of Emma Beaton – voice, Wes Corbett – banjo, Matt Arcara – guitar, Jacob Jolliff – mandolin, Bridget Kearney – double bass. The song ‘Jason’ is taken from their latest album “This Unknown Science” (Signature Sounds, 2011).

From the self-titled full length album by Boston’s folk psychedelic trio Quilt, out now on Mexican Summer. It was produced by Apollo Sunshine‘s Jesse Gallagher. The band comprises of Anna Fox Rochinski, Shane Butler and John Andrews. The founding members met as students at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
Formerly known as Tulsa and current member of Lower Dens, Carter Tanton has a new solo full-length “Freeclouds,” follow-up to Tulsa’s 2007 EP “I Was Submerged.” “Freeclouds” (this album’s title, reference David Bowie’s “Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud”) is due out on November 1st via Western Vinyl. ‘Murderous Joy’ is the first track for the album.
Recorded primarily in his apartment (with the exception of “Horrorscope” recorded by Brian Deck), the record features a guest appearance by Marissa Nadler with whom Carter co-writed one song of her recent self-titled album. And it was mixed by Brian McTear at Miner Street (Shaking Through). Carter will be touring with The War On Drugs & Purling Hiss this fall. A Boston/NYC/NJ psych-folk trio QUILT (formed in early 2009) consists of Anna Rochinski, Shane Butler and John Andrews (of Wisdom Tooth). Their new song ‘Children Of The Light’ is taken from their new self-titled cassingle tape (300 pressed) including tracks from “Cowboys In The Void/Penobska Oakwalk” digital single on their Bandcamp, out now from Burger Records. It was recorded by Jesse Gallagher (recently recorded & produced a brand new album “The Thorn 2” by Biff Rose) of Apollo Sunshine in Cambridge in 2010. And their forthcomig self-titled debut full-length is due out on November 7th via Mexican Summer.
“Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica, the world’s only ensemble dedicated to original third-stream exotica and the space-age pop music of Juan Garcia Esquivel, releases Third River Rangoon, its debut small-group recording, on May 31, 2011. This unique collection of works was recorded live at Futura Productions in Roslindale, MA, and was produced by exotica music authority Brother Cleve (Del Fuegos, Combustible Edison, Jetset DJ) and Mr. Ho.”
